Benthic Macroinvertebrate Monitors
StreamWatch monitors 50 sites for benthic macroinvertebrates, which are bugs living on the bottom of the stream. From the information collected, we can generate stream health scores and stream assessments.
The first step for becoming a benthic macroinvertebrate monitor is to attend a StreamWatch Introductory Training Workshop, where we cover the field techniques and bug identification. After attending the introductory training, new volunteers are encouraged to assist certified monitors in the field and to develop bug identification skills through experience and study. Some monitors then choose to become certified, which means that they can then Adopt a StreamWatch Site. The certification test involves identifying preserved bugs in vials, and demonstrating a thorough understanding of the monitoring protocol.

Bacteria Monitors
StreamWatch monitors 13 sites for E. coli bacteria. Our sites are located within the Moores Creek watershed in Charlottesville, and on the Rivanna and Moormans Rivers. We take samples on the first Sunday of each month between February and November. Learn more about our bacteria monitoring program here. For more information, contact Anne.
General Office Volunteers
Between monitoring seasons, we always have a pile of data entry, quality control, and other office tasks. If you enjoy entering data, working with Excel spreadsheets, crunching numbers with a calculator, using a red pen, or researching on the internet, we probably have a great volunteer task waiting for you! No prior experience necessary – training will be provided. Please contact Anne to learn more about our current office work.
Public Outreach Coordinator
Help us raise the profile of StreamWatch and the Rivanna watershed. Work with other interested StreamWatch volunteers to arrange and coordinate information/outreach tables at appropriate public events. Identify tabling opportunities, coordinate staffing for the events. Responsible for the maintaining and storing the supplies and materials needed. Help expand opportunities for “getting the word out” through media spots, written articles, social media, distributing StreamWatch literature, and other means. Help identify public speaking and other outreach opportunities for the Executive Director or other StreamWatch representatives. To learn more or sign up, contact David Hannah.
Newsletter Editor & Email Communications
Responsible for quarterly e-newsletters using the web-based Mail Chimp program. Assist with email communications with our listserve members and maintain the listserve. To learn more or sign up, contact David Hannah.
Graphic Design & Computer Support
Assist with developing education and outreach materials, including a new brochure in spring or summer of 2014. Occasionally assist with small projects (e.g., generate letters and address labels for mailings). Provide occasional support for computer or software problems.
